The price of a locksmith intervention is broken down into three distinct components: labor, supplies, and travel. Understanding this structure allows for comparisons between quotes and helps identify inconsistencies before payment. Since the decree of January 24, 2017, a written estimate is mandatory before any locksmith service, regardless of the amount.

Obligation of estimates and legal mentions in locksmithing

The threshold of 150 euros that previously exempted craftsmen from writing an estimate has been removed. The written estimate is mandatory from the first euro, including for a slammed door or a nighttime intervention. This document must detail the labor, parts, travel, VAT, and specify whether the estimate itself is chargeable or free.

The professional must also communicate their pricing structure before the contract is concluded. Total hourly rate including tax, method of time calculation, possible flat rates, travel expenses: these elements allow for verification of whether an emergency flat rate already covers travel or if it will be charged additionally. A locksmith who refuses to detail these items over the phone before traveling sends a warning signal.

Breakdown of locksmith pricing: three items to check line by line

A serious estimate always isolates three categories. If the invoice shows a total amount for “locksmith service” without detail, it does not comply with regulatory obligations and prevents any consistency checks.

Labor and intervention flat rate

Labor corresponds to the working time of the locksmith on-site. It is generally expressed as a flat rate per type of service (door opening, cylinder change, security installation) rather than an hourly rate. An experienced craftsman opens a slammed door much faster than a beginner: the flat rate reflects skill, not duration.

Labor should represent the majority share of the estimate for a common intervention. If supplies or travel overshadow this item, the distribution deserves an explanation.

Supplies: brand, reference, and certification

The estimate must mention the brand, exact reference, and level of certification of the installed parts. For a cylinder, the A2P standard with its star rating serves as a reliable benchmark. A cylinder described as “brand name” without a specific reference does not allow for verification of the actual price of the part or its quality.

  • Cylinder, lock, bolts, corner reinforcements: each part must be listed on a separate line with its unit price
  • The A2P certification (one, two, or three stars) indicates the level of resistance to break-in
  • A significant discrepancy between the catalog price of a reference and the billed amount justifies a request for explanation

Travel expenses

This item covers the round trip of the locksmith. Travel expenses must be included in the mandatory display of the professional’s rates. A travel flat rate included in the intervention is not the same as travel charged additionally: the distinction must be clearly stated on the estimate.

Emergency surcharge and right of withdrawal: what the law provides

Evening, night, weekend, or holiday interventions incur a surcharge. This surcharge is legal, but it must be announced before the travel and included in the estimate. A locksmith who quotes a standard rate over the phone and then applies a surcharge on-site does not comply with the obligation of prior information.

The 14-day withdrawal period does not cover urgent work expressly requested by the client. However, this exclusion is limited to parts and work strictly necessary to address the emergency. A complete lock replacement proposed on-site when only the door opening was urgent remains subject to the right of withdrawal.

This distinction has concrete consequences: if a locksmith takes advantage of a slammed door to sell the installation of a multipoint lock that was not immediately necessary, the client retains the option to withdraw from that part of the service.

Verification of the locksmith invoice before payment

The invoice must be provided before payment when the service reaches 25 euros including tax. It must contain a sufficiently detailed breakdown to allow comparison with the accepted estimate.

  • Check that each line of the invoice corresponds to a line of the signed estimate
  • Verify that the references of the installed parts (cylinder, lock) are identical to those announced
  • Ensure that the VAT rate applied corresponds to the type of service (reduced rate for renovations of homes over two years old, normal rate in other cases)
  • Refuse to sign an invoice that does not detail the items or that presents a total amount without breakdown

Any difference between the signed estimate and the final invoice must be justified by an amendment or written agreement from the client. A locksmith who modifies the amount without prior agreement exposes themselves to a dispute.

The method of payment also deserves attention. A craftsman who demands payment exclusively in cash, without the option to pay by card or check, makes any subsequent dispute more difficult. This is not illegal in itself, but it limits the traceability of the transaction.

The estimation of a locksmith’s price relies on a methodical reading of the estimate, item by item. The regulatory framework provides the client with concrete tools to demand transparency: mandatory estimates before intervention, display of rates, detailed invoices before payment. A refused estimate costs nothing, an accepted invoice without verification can be very expensive.
